Top Ten Seven Scariest Book Covers
I’ve only got seven, because I don’t like scary books and try actively to avoid scary covers. I hide my eyes when I watch scary movies and I cannot stand zombies or gore. I hate being frightened. So this one was tough for me!
1.
The use of white to set off those heterochromatic eyes is just freaky.
2.
It’s a thing with claws and a spiky head and it’s totally threatening and there’s a house *hides*
3.
Just a hand! That’s all you give me? *wails*
4.
I can’t even. Just looking at this makes me want to cry *hides under covers*
5.
‘Dressed in blood’. With blood on the dress and those petals? Scary as hell!
6.
The empty scene, and the single naked light bulb evoke such feelings of isolation.
7.
What is this creepy ginger with Medusa hair doing on this cover?
Chiara @ books for a delicate eternity
A Monster Calls is definitely one of the creepiest covers out there.
The one with the faces is really gross D:

I know, it makes me want to cry!

Creepy things just give me the, well, creeps!

That Medusa hair…that’s all there WAS on book covers in the 70’s and 80s.
Nemo
A bit before my time, I’m afraid!
Tanya Patrice
Awesomely scary book covers – I read and loved A Monster Calls, and Anna Dressed in Blood.
Nemo
I haven’t read them yet, but I do want to.
Tez Miller
Reminds me of that Family Guy episode I saw recently, in which Stewie was terrified of Queen’s “News of the World” album cover…
Here’s my tip for a scary book cover: Brenna Yovanoff’s THE REPLACEMENT: http://www.us.penguingroup.com/static/covers/all/5/1/9781595143815H.jpg

Oh my gosh that IS SO CREEPY. But also beautiful in an Addams family kind way. Thanks for sharing!
Lucy
Very spooky! Anna and Unwind are my faves in both content and cover 🙂 Starters is creepy, the redesigned covers are a little less scary I think.
Nemo
You’re right, the redesigned covers are a LOT less creepy than the original.
Sonnie @ ParaDays
Eek! Unsouled is VERY creepy looking!! I don’t know if I could hold that book to read it! Loved Anna Dressed in Blood! Possibly one of my favorite covers ever.
Great choices!
Here’s my Top Ten
Nemo
Anna is also a beautiful cover, not just a creepy one, but yes Unsouled is VERY creepy.
Lee @shewolfreads
A Monster Calls and Unwind are great covers!
Nemo
They’re fantastic, aren’t they? You kind of need to look a little closer to figure out why they’re so creepy.

I’ve never noticed how creepy A Monster Calls is until today after seeing it on so many lists! WOWSA. The Torturer’s Daughter looks so ominous. Unwind creeps me right out too — WHAT THE HECK IS ATTACHED TO THAT HAND!
Nemo
Yes, ominous! A great word for that cover. Also, both of the Unwind books freak me out. Not my kind of book at all!
Vilia
I’ve seen Anna so many times now (I picked her myself) that the scary factor is fading a little bit. The Starters one though is really, really creepy. Here’s my TTT
Nemo
You’re right, it’s not so terribly scary anymore, and it has a certain beauty with the macabre.
bookrockbetty
I’ve never liked that Unwind cover!!! It always creeps me out when I see it! I looove Anna Dressed in Blood. The cover is creepy, yet gorgeous!
Nemo
I completely agree with you on both counts!
bebeboss666
Ehh those are pretty scary! Starters looks really interesting, I wouldn’t mind having that as my Halloween read!
Great list!
My Top Ten List!
Nemo
I’ve had Starters for a while but in my defence my hubby bought it, not me! We also have Anna, but we don’t have any of the others.
diamondnazaneen

Yes, they are very effective!
Harry Potter
Harry slept badly. First he dreamed that he had overslept, and that Wood was yelling, “Where were you? We had to use Neville instead!” Then he dreamed that Malfoy and the rest of the Slytherin team arrived for the match riding dragons. He was flying at breakneck speed, trying to avoid a spurt of flames from Malfoy’s steed’s mouth, when he realized he had forgotten his Firebolt. He fell through the air and woke with a start.
