30 Day Animorphs Challenge: Day 1

Welcome to the Moonlight Library’s 30 Day Animorphs Challenge!
Despite Project Animorphs in 2013, I clearly do not talk about Animorphs enough.
This particular challenge is taken from the Heck Yeah Tumblr Challenges archive on Tumblr.

Day 1: Your Favourite of the Original Six Animorphs:

Rachel

Having recently re-read the entire series, I can safely say that it is indeed Rachel who is my favourite of the original six Animorphs. That can be attributed partly to her death, one of the hardest scenes in YA lit I’ve ever read, and have ever had to come to terms with. The Fault in Our Stars? Not sad. Rachel on a suicide mission? Heartbreaking.

I love her strength and her recklessness and her ability to never ever let anyone push her around. I love that she’s beautiful but impatient with her own beauty, like there’s something more important out there. She doesn’t even care, but she will accessorize and be glamorous regardless. I love her heart and her courage and her kickass battle morphs. I love how one time in bear morph her arm was cut off and she picked it up and bludgeoned a bad guy with the wet end. I love her soft spot and eventual relationship with Tobias.

I love her strong connection to Cassie despite having nothing in common. I love her witty comebacks against Marco because she has the safety of knowing that she is perfect and no one can say a bad thing about her. I love how she handled David. I love how even Crayak realised Rachel was the key. I just love her.

However when I was younger and first reading the series about twenty years ago, my favourite was a toss up between Cassie and Tobias. Cassie because I was (and still am) an animal lover, and I wanted to be as good a person as Cassie and make the right decisions and be so strong like her in my own morals. Also, she worked with animals and was the best morpher. She was an excellent role model.

Tobias because hello, broken kid, broken home, broken Animorph. Tragedy and backstory all  wrapped up in the Animorphs personal air service. I always wanted an exotic pet, and I think I fancied myself a Tobias-hawk because he was smart enough to talk back. Not only that, but he was Elfangor’s long-lost son so he’s technically part Andalite, and he hangs out with the free Hork-Bajir a lot. I’d love to hang out with sentient friendly aliens.
