Welcome to the Moonlight Library’s 30 Day Animorphs Challenge!
Despite Project Animorphs in 2013, I clearly do not talk about Animorphs enough.
This particular challenge is taken from the Heck Yeah Tumblr Challenges archive on Tumblr.

Day 30: Your thoughts on the ending

Waaah! It’s the last day of our 30 Day Animorphs Challenge! That came up quickly.

I’m aware that the ending is somewhat controversial. Not only was is a cliffhanger, but it wasn’t a positive one, and there were new elements introduced way late in the book that didn’t get solved either.

But after all these years, I still like that ending. It couldn’t have been a ‘happy ever after’ ending, because Applegate never shied away from the horrible depiction of war. She always treated her readers with respect and never dumbed anything down. The ending showed that for some people, the war doesn’t end. Maybe for children it’s hard to understand, but I always did, and I always admired her for having the ovaries to end it the way she did.

The ending also trained me well as a reader. With cliffhangers, you can imagine what comes next. Not only was the ending of the series a cliffhanger, but it was a horrible one, too. This trained me as a reader to never take cliffhangers or bad endings badly. It could always be worse. It could end like Animorphs. I’m a patient reader and can wait between books thanks to Animorphs and that ending.
