Day 21: Favourite book from your childhood
The Silver Brumby by Elyne Mitchell
This book always evokes memories of summer reading, on the long school break between grades over Christmas. Every summer I get the urge to re-read, even though I’ve read it so many times now I’ve lost count.
I love the magic of the wild country and sometimes I like to think I’d even know my way around the Snowy Mountains where the story takes place – of course, the fictional world of the Cascades, not the real place.
There’s just something so wonderful and beautiful about stories set in the Australian bush where the land isn’t trying to kill you or be particularly Gothic – just majestic and untamed and utterly thrilling.
I loved this book so much I name all my cars after horses – Thowra was a silver Mazda I once had – zoom zoom!

Oh yay! I always loved reading horse books when I was a young child too! I think I basically read ALL of the Saddle Club books because I wasn’t allowed to watch the show (no TV for Renee child!)
Although this actually looks kinda cool, I love stories about the country and small towns so I guess I’ll just add it to my ever growing TBR list… 😉 😛

I would have loved to read more Saddle Club books but I only owned two (random ones given to me by thoughtful relatives) and my library didn’t have a good selection. They’re super-hard to track down, now!

I have never read The Silver Brumby but it sounds like my kind of book, I love horses so much and a book set in Australia is even better. My favourite book from when I was younger that is still one of my favourites is actually the whole Anne of Green Gables series with my favourite being the last one Rilla of Ingleside. I just devoured these when I was younger and I still do all the time. Thanks for sharing your favourite childhood book I love the idea.

I think you’d like The Silver Brumby! It’s very ‘classic’ though, and the language isn’t contemporary. I haven’t read Ann of Green Gables but I would like to at some point!
