Top Ten Books I Disliked/Hated but Am Really Glad I Read

Here are my top ten books that I really did not enjoy reading, or upon finishing felt utterly disappointed by, and the reasons why:

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern because it showed that blurbs can outright lie about book contents.

House of Night by PC Cast because I can tell everyone why it sucked with authority. Because Zoey Redbird is the ultimate Mary Sue and it’s super into slut-shaming even though, if we go by Zoey’s rules for girls, she’s the biggest ‘slut’ of them all.

Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick because I’m glad I recognised that just because an author says a love interest is hot (and literally their only ‘positive’ feature) they can still be a rapey stalking douchebag and fangirls are terrible and should be avoided at all costs.

Fallen by Lauren Kate because it taught me that books that try to capitalise on the current trend are awful and also hate-reading is a thing that happens. And also the cover is really gorgeous.

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley because it taught me not all classics are worth reading and that men in general do not tend to write the kinds of books I like to read.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green because it proved I don’t like John Green’s writing.

The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski because it taught me to be wary of hyped books I don’t necessarily like the blurbs of, and also racism in literature is problematic as fuck.

Prom Impossible by Laura Pauling because it taught me that finishing books you hate are a waste of time.

Goddess Interrupted by Aimee Carter because it showed me that sequels can suck balls even if first in series are pretty cool.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman because at least I gave it a shot

What are some books you hated but are glad you read? I’d love to know in the comments below.

Wow, awesome post idea, and awesome post! It led me back to a bunch of your reviews from before I started following your blog, which was great.

I haven’t read most of these because I tend to avoid hyped books, but I did read Fallen, and your summary is perfect.
