Top Ten Cover Redesigns I Loved and Hated

Submitted by Rachelle @ Shell’s Stories

For this Top Ten Tuesday, I am:

  • Comparing the original cover of the book with one of its most recent covers, or
  • Comparing the original cover to an international version.

LOVED

1. The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

2011-2017

I love this redesign. I think I would have picked up the more colourful one a lot earlier than I did.

2. Little Monsters by Kara Thomas

I’m not sure which one is the original, but I like the darker one with the face in shadow.

3. The Diviners by Libba Bray

2012-2017

The original one on the left is super non-engaging, and the one one on the right is really atmospheric.

4. Goldenhand by Garth NIx

HarperCollins (US/UK?) vs Allen and Unwin (Aus?)

There’s something off about the illustrations of the main characters in the HarperCollins version. The posing looks stiff and awkward. In comparison, the Allen and Unwin version is gorgeous!

5. Poison Study by Maria V Snyder

original vs Australia

Look, just to be clear, I still really like the original Poison Study cover… I just LOVE the Australian version.

HATED

1. The Aware by Glenda Larke

2003-2013

The original version looks very classically high fantasy, whereas the more recent version looks cheap and unprofessional, as well as not really advertising what’s inside the book.

2. Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

2010 vs movie ti in 2017

I legit love Zoey Deutch and loved the film, but I don’t love the concept they went with in the film tie-in cover.

3. Shatter Me by Tahera Mafi

I don’t know which is which, they’re both by HarperCollins and they both seem to have appeared in 2014.

But I like the one on the left better because I’m a sucker for a girl in a pretty dress.

4. The Invasion by KA Applegate

1996 vs 2011

The original looks so much better, even if the more recent one is lenticular.

5. Crewel by Ginnifer Albin

I don’t know which one is international/original in this pairing, all I know is that one is really pretty and the other is really not.

What do you think? Which of these cover changes do you like and which do you loathe? Let me know in the comments below!
