I’ve stopped buying finished copies… mostly

The literary urge to buy a finished copy of every book we fall in love with after reading an ARC, audiobook, or eBook…

Also known as ‘shelf trophies’.

I used to feel like I was letting down my favourite authors if I didn’t add their books to my physical shelf, but I’ve come to realise there are plenty of other ways to show support. I’d like to share why I’ve stopped buying finished copies of books I’ve already enjoyed in other formats.

First off, my bookshelves are groaning under the weight of my TBR. I am seriously concerned that if I attempt double stacking, the shelves will just fail. While I absolutely adore the look and feel of physical books, I’ve had to face the harsh truth: I simply don’t have room for more. Buying copies just to see them end up in storage feels like a waste, especially when I could be putting those funds toward new reads or supporting authors in other meaningful ways.

And guess what? Supporting authors doesn’t always mean you are obliged to purchase their book, let alone purchasing in every format, or more than one copy.

Borrowing books from the library and posting reviews of ARCs or audiobooks are fantastic ways to give back. Libraries purchase books, sometimes multiple copies, which is incredibly supportive, and your reviews help other readers discover these amazing stories. Plus, sharing your thoughts online can spread the word far and wide, reaching new audiences and sparking interest in their work.

So, while I might not be filling my shelves with every book I’ve ever loved, I’m still cheering for those authors and helping boost their visibility in ways that matter. If you find yourself in a similar bind, know that you’re doing great by supporting authors through libraries and reviews. Let’s keep sharing the book love in all its forms!
