Day 27: The most surprising plot twist or ending

Feral

Feral by Holly Schindler

Normally I’m not one for plot twists. Normally I can see them coming, or at least guess them. I guess this is because I normally read fantasy, sci-fi, or contemporary novels, which have quite strict world-building. If the plot twist doesn’t work within the worldbuilding, it doesn’t work.

But I’ve also fallen head over heels for magical realism which is basically, as far as I can tell from what I’ve read so far, is like contemporary with a paranormal twist.

Last year I read Feral by Holly Schindler, and the entire time I thought I was reading maybe a light paranormal book or a magical realism book.

There’s a big plot twist at the end, after we finally find out who murdered the poor girl at the start, and it has to do with something that happened at the start of the novel as well.

I don’t really want to give the twist itself away, but it was by far the most surprising and unexpected twist of my reading life.

I need to add that some people (perhaps smarter or more savvy than myself) called bullshit or saw it coming – only I didn’t, because I thought I was reading a different genre with different rules.

Fooled me!
