This week’s question:

What are your top five favourite book covers of all time?

Oh boy, COVERS! I am a sucker for a pretty cover. I like all the pretties, what can I say. However, I have learned to become a lot more cynical when it comes to YA covers. Us YA readers LOVE a pretty cover, and the marketing gurus know this. They fill our books with a glut of ‘pretty white girl in a prom dress’ covers – which honestly I really love. I shouldn’t, but I do. Most of them have horrendous stories hiding in them.

Which brings me to our first cover. This is the first ever book I didn’t enjoy. That says a lot about my reading habits. (For the record I’ve read The Betrayal of Natalie Hargrove and it was AMAZEBALLS, which is obviously why they repacked it into a ‘pretty white girl in a prom dress’ cover. I just hated these books and have not yet read the others).

Fallen (Fallen, #1)

Innocently in 2010 I walked into a bookshop, saw this book sitting next to a poster of its equally beautiful sister, and practically had a fit. Torment was being released in about two weeks, so I pre-ordered it, and purchased Fallen. I went home quite happy with myself. Several weeks later I miserable and depressed. I couldn’t figure out why. All I knew is that these books were poorly written, the characters were all pathetic and also badly written, and the romance was one of the worst I’ve read. Ever. I hated these books so much that I gave them away to a friend. I never give books away.

And now I want to re-buy them so I can have the complete set ofpretties on my bookshelf.

My husband won’t let me buy them. I’m so pathetic. BECAUSE THIS COVER IS NOT ACCURATE. In the book, Luce cuts her hair short and bleaches it. But you know what? I DON’T CARE. IT’S PRETTY.

But when you see a cover like this one, you just want to own it.

Rapture (Fallen, #4)

I mean COME ON. I NEED IT.

So yes, they are beautiful. They are so beautiful I want to re-buy them even though I gave them away because I hated the inside so much. SOB!

HOWEVER. I also own two books with incredibly beautiful covers that have a story that is made of AWESOMESAUCE. Allow me to share with you:

Unearthly (Unearthly, #1)

Aaaaaaaaargh! Aneurysm. This is a sublimely beautiful. It is even accurate with Clara’s strange hair colour.

Hallowed (Unearthly, #2)

I was so happy when I found out Hallowed continued the same theme. I am eagerly awaiting the announcement of Boundless’ Australian cover as well.

Wither (The Chemical Garden, #1)

This is the republished 2012 version from Harper Voyager. It’s my favourite Wither cover because it doesn’t have those circles in all the other versions, and the title text is bigger. I think it’s more nicely laid out than the others as well.

Those are my five favourite covers. What are yours?
