Seven Years of The Moonlight Library!

Today it’s the seventh anniversary of the Moonlight Library!

That’s right, seven years ago today I published my very first book review, the Twilight series.

And since I never really talked about WHY it was the Twilight series, this year I’m going to explain a bit about that.

See, in 2008, I completed a four year Film and Literature degree. That meant that I had to read a lot of books.

I mean A LOT OF BOOKS.

I had zero time for reading for pleasure. I didn’t even have enough time to read all of the books that were assigned to me for reading class. I was studying full time, working part-time, and I basically burned out.

I got a job, and for the next ten or so months, I didn’t read anything except Memoirs of a Geisha when I was on holiday, and even that took me several weeks with literally nothing to do. I had no interest in reading. Turns out that studying what you love kind of kills that.

For my birthday that year, I got a book voucher, and when I was shopping, I saw the Twilight box set.

The first movie had already come out, and loads of people hated it. My best friend had threatened to disown me if I read the books…

so I bought the books in secret…

and read the entire thing in like a week.

It was Twilight that got me back into reading. I know there are many issues with it stemming from domestic abuse to infantalising to the madonna/whore complex and the promotion of the housewife above other pursuits, but it was easy to read, easy to digest, and I flew through the pages. It was the first time I had really enjoyed reading, was keen to get back to my book, and read deep into the night.

That is why Twilight was my very first review on this blog seven years ago.
